While discussing Plato in class today, one phrase mentioned took my interest. The term is Ultimate Reality, which made me wonder how one reality can be the perfect, the best, the Ultimate reality. It initially conjured up memories to when I first encountered the term Hyperreality. I also wondered how one's reality could be hyper. Upon investigation, I learned that this so called Hyperreality was theorized by Jean Baudrillard, Albert Borgmann, Daniel Boorstin, and Umberto Eco, who I first picked up the term from.
Ultimate Reality, however, is a bit different than Hyperreality which was simply described by Eco as "the authentic fake". Ultimate Reality when talking of religion, in common terms would be unity with the divine. Many monotheistic religions believed that reaching this unity of the Ultimate Reality would bring one the meaning of life.
In philosophical thought, Ultimate Reality refers to thoughts of the absolute, intrinsic value and also the meaning of life. In this type of thought, the Ultimate Reality is the embodiment of idealism.
Q: Can reality ever achieve the idealism of the Ultimate Reality?
